Angelfish Web Calendar Upgrade (24/04/2008)

For those of you that use our web availability calendar feature in, we have recently made the following fixes and improvements: -
  • The popup calendar (which had stopped working due to a Microsoft Internet Explorer update) has been replaced with a day/month/year selector, which is just as easy, if not easier, to use.
  • The calendar now includes a switch to a monthly view, so visitors to your site can now view a full month's availability.
  • For those of you who allow online booking reqeusts, visitors can now click on a particular available date to be taken automatically to the room selection screen, with the clicked room automatically selected.
  • Selection of adults, children and infants is now done on the final (confirmation) screen rather than on the room selection screen.
  • Self-catering rooms/apartments are now separated from B&B rooms so that it is clearer to visitors which type of accommodation they are selecting.

MS Word Support for B&B Manager (05/04/2008)

The latest version of B&B Manager allows you to create invoices, confirmation letters and registration forms in Microsoft Word as an alternative to the Adobe PDF format. The MS Word options offer users more flexibility in setting up document templates and editing the generated documents.

B&B Manager users can download the new version by selecting Website > Check for Product Updates from the top menu.

Secure Credit Card Facilities (12/03/2008)

We have become increasingly aware of online booking systems that store the credit card details of visitors for the guest house owner to retrieve and pre-authorise at a later time. Although many web site developers will claim that such systems are secure, any system that stores credit card data (as opposed to taking a single payment there and then) must be PCI DSS compliant. This is a standard defined and enforced by the major card issuing companies, and failure to comply with this can result in heavy fines and cessation of online trading activities in the event of a security breach.

The process of obtaining PCI DSS compliance is lengthy and expensive, so it is unlikely that the majority of existing systems in the accommodation trade actually comply. We take the view that storing any sensitive financial information online is to be avoided (however secure the server claims to be) and that the safest type of payment engine is one where the payment is processed straight away, as with PayPal, Google Checkout, WorldPay, etc.

One other problem with the credit card storage systems is that generally speaking they do not perform any pre-authorisation of the card. Unscrupulous people have already realised this and will often provide a made up card number that simply has the correct number of digits. If the guest then fails to turn up and you have not pre-authorised the card yourself, it's too late to realise that an invalid card number has been supplied. The next release of Angelfish B&B Manager will include a tool that will validate credit card numbers, and although this is not as good as a pre-authorisation, it will pattern check the number supplied against the specified card type. This is a good first step against fraud prevention, but we would always advise you, where possible, to take a deposit payment at the time of booking.

Online Help Facility (08/03/2008)

There is now a comprehensive and up-to-date help facility on the Angelfish website at www.angelfishsoftware.co.uk/help. The online help includes a search facility to help you navigate more quickly to the features you are interested in.

B&B Manager Upgrade (06/03/2008)

A new version of Angelfish B&B Manager is available. Existing users can upgrade freely directly from their existing version. The new version contains the following enhancements/new features
  • The ability to print blank invoices and registration forms
  • Confirmation letters are automatically dated as the date of the first deposit payment received
  • VAT Reports now contain Net Sales and Net Expenses in addition to the VAT collected/paid
  • The Bookings screen (select Bookings > View Bookings) now contains more filters for selecting specific bookings. You can filter by booking status (confirmed, reserver, etc.), room, date from and date to. The settings you apply are also remembered, so no need to reset them when you exit and re-start B&B Manager
  • The Booking Details screen now has a Guest button at the top that you can click on to view the full guest details
  • The Guest Details screen has a View Bookings button that you can click on to view all the bookings made by that guest
  • You can set B&B Manager to automatically retrieve your online booking requests at start up, and every half hour thereafter, by selecting Hotel, going to the "Other" tab and ticking "Check for Online Bookings"
  • When processing an online booking request, there is an additional option to Remove an online booking request. This removes the request from your web calendar without automatically notifying the prospective guest by e-mail.

Increased Online Bookings with Angelfish (01/03/2008)

Several of our users are reporting an increase in bookings directly from their website as a result of using Angelfish Room Calendar in tandem with B&B Manager.

Angelfish Room Calendar allows you to show a live availability calendar in your own website, customised to fit in with your own styles and colours, and updated directly from B&B Manager with a single button click.

Visitors to B&B and Guest House websites are increasingly expecting to find up-to-date availability information, and our experience shows that those establishments offering this have a definite edge over the competition.

New Menu Stucture (20/02/2008)

A new update to B&B Manager has been released. All features concerned with keeping your web calendar up to date are located in the Website menu.

B&B Manager Upgrade (02/02/2008)

Angelfish works with BIGHA (30/11/2007)

We have recently been working with the Bath Independent Guest House Association to ensure that all their members who use Angelfish are able to update the associations late availability website at the same time as keeping their own website availability calendars up to date. This has already reduced the data entry overhead for B&B owners.

We are actively seeking more Guest House Associations who would be interested in such a facility, as we feel that this can be of real benefit to members of such associations. If you are involved in an independent association, please contact us at admin@angelfishsoftware.co.uk.

Online booking now available with Angelfish (07/09/2007)

From Monday 10th September 2007, Angelfish customers will be able to accept online bookings through Angelfish B&B Manager. Your website visitors can now make provisional online reservations which you can either confirm or refuse using B&B Manager. You will be notified by e-mail whenever a new provisional booking is received, and your guest will be notified by e-mail as soon as you confirm or refuse the booking.

All guests making a booking must provide a telephone number and an e-mail address, so you can have the extra security of contact by phone if you would prefer. The booking form does not ask guests to make any form of payment; you must arrange this with them yourself when you confirm the booking.

Users who do not wish to take advantage of the online booking facility need not do anything - your availability page will continue working as it is. If you do wish to enable online booking, simply log into the members area at www.angelfishsoftware.co.uk/members, click on the Hotels link at the top, tick the Allow Online Booking box near the bottom of the page and press the Update Hotel button.

Online booking users will also need to ugrade to version 1.0.0.9 of Angelfish B&B Manager, which you can do by simply starting B&B Manager and selecting File > Check for Product Updates from the menu. This version will be available from Monday 10th September.

There is no additional charge for the online booking facility, and no commission to pay either.

Many people are now booking their holidays and business trips using the internet, and this number is set to rise dramatically with the explosion in broadband and the increasing number of tourism related websites being built. Almost all guest houses, even the smaller establishments, now have a web presence, whether that is a single page within an accommodation catalogue, or their own dedicated website. Consumer expectations of websites are increasing all the time, and people will view your site as a reflection of your establishment and the quality of service offered
